Automatic sentence diagrammer

Okay, this is just freaking cool. :) I stumbled upon this as a means to help ds9 better understand sentence structure. It's the Reed-Kellogg Diagrammer - a (free) tool that lets you type in your own sentence and then diagrams it for you, and lets you mouse over each section to see the word type and function in the sentence. I remember diagramming sentences as a kid, but I get the impression that this practice has been lost in most workbooks and classrooms since then. It's too bad - this little exploration was REALLY helpful to ds9 in understanding how a sentence is much like a skeleton, which "holds up" the other parts of the structure. And because this nifty little tool diagrams for you, ds9 can plug in sentence after sentence to see how the structure changes as he makes changes in the sentence. TOO COOL!!!

  1. Wow, thank you! We totally needed this. Grace is getting into some scary diagramming and I can't remember much about it.

  5. Sometimes I've noticed it doesn't like complex sentences with bad grammar. Try something simple like "the dog ate the cat". If that doesn't work, it might be a problem with your browser, in which case I'd simply try a different browser. That's all I can think of...

  10. It often gets the diagram wrong on more complicated or subtle sentences, so don't depend on it as authoritative. Better is to use SenDraw from University of Central Florida Department of English, which doesn't do the diagram for you but can enable you to draw a diagram on the computer after you have analyzed the sentence yourself. That makes it a better tool for learning.

  22. How do you get the free version? I see the word free, but I keep getting sent to a purchasing page.

  23. The author says, "Yep, this is a subscription app but I cannot make it more visible unfortunately. Unlike other stores Windows doesn't understand subscriptions, it allows only Free or Paid apps. Paid is no go because it'll incur a onetime payment on top of the subscription just for download. So Free is the only option. Sorry for that."
